For many of us, being in the great outdoors surrounded by the beauty of nature helps us to feel peaceful and connected to God.

Seth Lewis helps us to experience God and the beauty of creation in an even deeper way by giving us a biblical understanding of what God is saying to us through the world he’s created for us. As we view the plants, the animals, the skies, the earth, the seas and everything else God has created through the lens of his word, we will experience heartfelt joy as we worship him for who he is and what he has made.

So take the time to slow down and enjoy the gift of God’s world as you interpret it through the gift of God’s word. These reflections can be used devotionally.

Learning to Read God's Second Book

Drawing on the idea that God speaks through both Scripture and creation, Seth Lewis encourages readers to slow down and pay attention to the world around them—not as an end in itself, but as a way of knowing and responding to the Creator. From lilies and ants to mountains and stars, creation becomes a living illustration of God's character, care, and faithfulness. What I appreciated most was that this is not merely a book about understanding nature but about learning to see differently. It gently trains the reader to notice God's provision, delight in His creation, and stand in awe of Him. Several illustrations were memorable, particularly the reminder that if God knows every star by name, He also knows the details of our lives. This book left me more attentive, grateful, and aware of God's presence in ordinary things. A thoughtful and accessible read that encourages Christians to engage with both of God's "textbooks"—His Word and His world.

Brilliant book

Seth Lewis loves the outdoors and his enthusiasm for the wonders, beauties and sheer joy of God's creation is very infectious. Ultimately, his purpose in writing this book is to point us to the Maker of the rivers and stars and in whose image we are uniquely made. Lewis shows us how God speaks to us through nature but we need His Word to help us interpret it - he calls it the Rosetta Stone that allows us to do so. And there is an honest acknowledgement that our groans of suffering are echoed in the natural world. The second part of the book focuses on each aspect of creation, from light to water, from creatures of the deep to humanity itself. How often we walk through this world blinded to the marvels that pulse and thrive around us. There is a reason why a walk in the woods, a swim in a lake or a day climbing a hill exhilarates us and makes us feel our own aliveness. But more exhilarating than even the refreshing breath of the breeze on my face or the spectacular view of mountain peaks or the gasp-inducing delight of swimming in the sea, is the knowledge that one glorious day I will live in God's new creation. He will wipe away everyone of my tears as He welcomes me into a place where there is no more pain, or crying or sorrow - where there will be no need for the sun because God himself will illuminate the world.
