“Here is rock: all else is sand” was J. C. Ryle’s description of the Bible in the eighteenth century.

Whether the challenge has been tradition or reason, or experience in more recent times, the Scriptures are still supreme today: God-breathed, reliable, and trumping all other authorities.

Yet the supremacy of Scripture is not some dictate imposed by a faceless despot. Far from it! Scripture’s words are those of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who laid down his life for his people.

A great primer on Scripture

I find Tim Chester to be one of the clearest, compelling and conscientious writers today. He seems to be able to write on a wide variety of topics with humble authority, vivid illustration, and clear application. This tiny book in a new series with Union is classic Chester. Distilling the doctrine of Scripture to bit size chapters, we examine what it means for Scripture to be Supreme - over reason, tradition and experience. We also explore what exactly the Bible does tell us and the place of humility and the church in understanding it. The final chapter on the dynamic nature of Scripture - that God is actively speaking today and changing lives and loves - is superb. I guess my only quibble is the price.
