Many beautiful versions of John Bunyan's work have been produced over the past three centuries. Often these versions included wood-cut illustrations from some of the finest artists of the day, and yet many of those versions are out of print and few heirloom quality editions exist today. Our desire was to honor the rich legacy of illustrations of The Pilgrim's Progress with this new edition.

Some of the special features of the Legacy Edition include:

  • Unabridged text with carefully updated language
  • 150+ vintage illustrations
  • Heirloom quality cloth cover, gilded edges, and ribbon page marker
  • Full ESV Bible references in margins
  • Large Print
  • Frameable 6.5x8.5" Pilgrim's Journey Matte Cardstock Map

Our hope is that, as this story has impacted generations of Christians, this edition will continue the legacy of this book for many generations to come.

Endorsements:

"I first read The Pilgrim’s Progress as a teenager. I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve read it since. All these years later, this spiritual allegory still resonates deep within, as I track Christian’s engagement with foes, friends, fools, and failures, on his journey to the Celestial City. With Christian, I have learned to trust alone in the sole sufficiency of Christ’s atoning work, to delight in the surpassing worth of Christ’s excellence, to know the heart-changing effect of God’s gift of faith in Christ, to resist the constant temptations and allurements to depart from the narrow way, to watch for doubt and despair, to cultivate prayerful dependance on God’s Word, to practice regular repentance from sin, to value fellowship with God’s people, and to remain focused on the glory yet to be revealed. It goes without saying, therefore, that I am thrilled to see this beautiful Legacy Edition produced by Lithos Kids. My prayer is that it will introduce a new generation of believers to this timeless treasure."—Stephen Yuille, Professor of Spiritual Formation and Pastoral Theology at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary

"One of the most printed and popular books in the English language, John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress is available in a multitude of editions. But I venture to say that there are none currently like this with its sidebar references to Holy Scripture and inclusion of the splendid illustrations that adorned a major Victorian edition of this enormously influential work. A valuable, and hopefully valued, possession for every family."—Michael A.G. Haykin, Chair and Professor of Church History & Director of The Andrew Fuller Center for Baptist Studies, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary & Professor of Church History at Heritage Theological Seminary, Cambridge, Ontario.

“One is never too young or too old to read—or re-read—John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress. This beautiful edition of a timeless classic remains true to the original while made more readable for today. With a gorgeous illustrations, cover art by one of my favorite artists, Stephen Crotts, and a stellar introduction by the renowned scholar Michael Haykin, this is a version for everyone and every household.”—Karen Swallow Prior, author of On Reading Well: Finding the Good Life through Great Books and Research Professor of English and Christianity and Culture at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary

“Soaked and saturated with scripture, Pilgrim's Progress has been a handbook for many walking toward the Celestial City. The Legacy Edition is a gentle and accessible companion to young travellers who may be just starting their journey, as well as a rich resource for seasoned travellers who want the scripture references readily available in the margins. This story will feed your family for many years to come!”—Irene Sun, author of Taste and See: All About God's Goodness, and God Counts: Numbers in his Word and his World

John Bunyan

John Bunyan was born in Elstow, near Bedford, in 1628, the son of Thomas Bunyan and Margaret Bentley. He followed his father into the tinker’s trade but rebelled against God and ‘had but few equals, both for cursing, swearing, lying, and blaspheming the holy name of God’. As a teenager, he joined Cromwell’s New Model Army, but continued his rebellious ways. His life was saved on one occasion when a fellow-soldier took his place at the siege of Leicester, and ‘as he stood sentinel he was shot in the head with a musket bullet and died’. Discharged from the army after three years, Bunyan married a God-fearing woman (whose name is unknown) in 1648, who brought two books to the marriage: The Plain Man’s Pathway to Heaven (Arthur Dent) and The Practice of Piety (Lewis Bayly). These convicted Bunyan of his sin and he made attempts to reform his life. But he realised that he was lost and without Christ when he came into contact with a group of women whose ‘joyous conversation about the new birth and Christ deeply impressed him’.

In 1651 the women introduced him to their pastor in Bedford, John Gifford, who was instrumental in leading Bunyan to repentance and faith. That same year he moved to Bedford with his wife and four children, including Mary, his firstborn, who had been blind from birth. He was baptised by immersion in the River Ouse in 1653. Appointed a deacon of Gifford’s church, Bunyan’s testimony was used to lead several people to conversion. By 1655 Bunyan was himself preaching to various congregations in Bedford, and hundreds came to hear him. John Owen said of him that he would gladly exchange all his learning for Bunyan’s power of touching men’s hearts. In the following years, Bunyan began publishing books and became established as a reputable Puritan writer, but around this time, his first wife died. He remarried in 1659, a godly young woman named Elizabeth, who was to be a staunch advocate for her husband during his imprisonments – for in 1660 Bunyan was arrested for preaching without official permission from King Charles II; he was to spend the next 12½ years in Bedford County Gaol. Although a time of much suffering, Bunyan’s years in prison were productive, for he wrote extensively, with only the Bible and Foxe’s Book of Martyrs beside him, publishing such titles as Christian Behaviour, The Holy City and A Defence of the Doctrine of Justification. Of particular significance for his life-story was Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, which chronicled his life up to the time of his imprisonment. He was eventually released in 1672, and took up his pastorate in Bedford, having been appointed by the congregation the preceding January.

After some fruitful years of ministry, in March of 1675 Bunyan was again imprisoned for preaching publicly without a license. It was during this imprisonment that he began the first part of his most famous book, The Pilgrim’s Progress, which was to sell more than 100,000 copies in its first ten years in print. Released in 1677, Bunyan spent the last ten years of his life ministering to his congregation and writing, including Come and Welcome to Jesus Christ (1678), The Life and Death of Mr Badman (1680), The Holy War (1682), and the second part of The Pilgrim’s Progress (1685). He published ten more books in the last three years of his life, amongst them The Jerusalem Sinner Saved and The Acceptable Sacrifice.
