A succinct statement of Christian doctrine from one of Christianity's most beloved thinkers. Here, master storyteller and essayist C. S. Lewis tackles the central questions of the Christian faith: Who was Jesus? What did he accomplish? What does it mean for me?

In these classic essays, which began as talks on the BBC during World War II, Lewis creatively and simply explains the basic tenets of Christianity. Taken from the core section of Mere Christianity, this book provides an accessible way for people to discover these timeless truths. For those looking to remind themselves of what they hold true, or those looking for a snapshot of Christianity, this book is a wonderful introduction to the faith, as well as to Lewis' ideas and apologetics.

A Clearer Introduction to Lewis’ Theology

What Christians Believe starts with a couple of chapters that feel like a mythological discussion of good vs. evil and pop philosophy. At first, I even felt defensive, especially when Lewis argues that Christians are more liberal and understanding of other faiths than atheists. Thankfully, the book eventually gets to the core message: reconciliation with God through Jesus, repentance, and the basics of Christian belief. He touches on baptism, communion, and the call to choose the “right side” before it’s too late. Theologically, Lewis is not always convincing, and the book leaves much to be desired in depth—but as a clear, structured introduction to Christian belief, it’s a helpful start. For someone like me who prefers clarity and doctrinal focus over allegory, this book is far more accessible than most of his other works.
